RIP Chuck Ramirez

Chuck Ramirez Caricature

Way back when in the late 1990's, I was honored when my friend and colleague Chuck Ramirez called me one morning and asked if I wanted to do the invite for the Blue Star Arts & Eats - my answer - Totally! The only thing was.... it was due to the printer the next day.

I remember drawing this little dude, my caricature of Chuck, while I was on the phone with him going over the details of the invite. I finished the illustration, bought some props: vino, daisy and a pear at HEB (save the receipts!) brought everything downtown to Robert Lopez's photography studio and shot it. This is one of the polaroids I saved from the shoot.

Thanks to Chuck this was my first of 3 invites for Arts & Eats and I can still hear him sincerely digging the final piece and thanking me profusely for making it happen with such short notice. That next week there was a nice bottle of wine from Chuck at my office along with a thank you note. Thank you Chuck. Thank you for your inspiration and generosity over the years - I miss you already man!

The 100 Greatest Bands You've (Probably) Never Heard

SPIN Magazine has a sweet little list of The 100 Greatest Bands You've (Probably) Never Heard and they totally nailed it with the closest thing Taco Land ever had to a house band with San Antonio's answer to the cement city Beach Boys, the mighty Big Drag!

Directly from SPIN:

BAND NAME: Big Drag
A trio from San Antonio who embodied neighboring Austin’s slacker ethos to a fault, the band melded the Jesus and Mary Chain’s fuzz and the Ramones’ three chords to sunny surf pop to create three-minute koans in the early 90s. Making believers of Yo La Tengo when they rolled through town, YLT appropriated Big Drag’s cover of the Beach Boys’ “Little Honda” (right down to the one-note guitar solo) for their own I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One.

To be continued...

For the complete list of 100 artists, check out the August 2009 issue of SPIN.

All Hail The Cheese & Burger Society!

Ladies and Gentlemen - this is how you sell cheese!

Humorous voiceovers, mouthwatering photography and engaging navigation add to the overall interactive experience on this unique and memorable site as it pays tribute to the 30 greatest cheeseburgers of all time—made with Wisconsin cheese.

Dig the awesome Cheese & Burger Society site built by the amazingly talented folks at Shine.

Hungry yet?

Do yourself a favor, cut to the chase and bookmark the San Antonio Burger Blog. While they don't have my favorite local burger listed yet, the Black Angus burger from Boudros on the our fabulous Riverwalk, it's a great resource for anyone in quest of the perfect burger and I'm sure they'll get to my favorite eventually!

And just so you know, Boudro's only serves this burger at lunch and it's not on the menu - just ask and they'll hook you up.

Texas Draws Opening Reception Tonight!

Texas Draws Logo Final
Texas Draws 1

I never get tired and still totally dig the thrill of seeing finished projects in print for the first time - especially when it's for something that's puro San Antonio!

The Southwest School Of Art & Craft presents: Texas Draws, the inaugural exhibition of a new series instituted to highlight contemporary drawing in Texas.

It was a pleasure and a big gracias to Kathy Armstrong, Barbara Hill and all the awesome folks over at the Southwest School Of Art & Craft for including me in this project as the designer of the Texas Draws logo for the inaugural of this biennial exhibition.

The awesome cover illustration, Trace, is by Lubbock, Texas artist Alice Leora Briggs.

Opening Reception for Texas Draws 1 is Thursday, July 2, 2009 form 5:30-7:30.

More info: www.swschool.org

Hope to see you there, have a great July 4th!

Yo Adrian!

Yo Adrian!
That's Right! My Spurs clinched their first Southwest Division championship since 2005-06 after Wednesday's overtime victory vs New Orleans!

Go Spurs!

And hey, do y'all remember those Lakers Suck t-shirts I did way back in 2002, the original black and silver ones? (and by original I mean first), well check out the under-shirt of true blue Spurs fan Adrian, a waiter at the Oak Hills Country Club during the recent Recycled Style Show event.

And speaking of those Lakers Suck t-shirts, although I no longer sell the originals (my first batch of 144 sold out in 3 days!) there seems to be no shortage of lazy, lame knock offs available out there - I wish I could find a few versions that are closer to the version I did with the spur - I'd totally buy one!:

Here, here, here, and here!

I love it and I feel like Cheech when I say "Aw man, somebody stole that thing I ripped off!" All I did was borrow the spur graphic and a local chant, added some sparkle to the silver ink (that sparkle ink confirms you've got an original by the way) and there you have it!

It's gonna be a battle for us to make the finals this year, but after Finley's last two games and the fact we're talking about our Spurs with Pop at the helm, so dude... yeah - anything is possible!

Go Spurs!

Articopia! Holiday Open House

Here's one of the latest HMK Archive projects, the invite and logo for this years Articopia, Saturday, December 13th from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM at the Ursuline Campus of the Southwest School of Art & Craft.

The Ursuline Campus of the Southwest School of Art & Craft, on the National Register of Historic Places, is located on the edge of downtown San Antonio, on our awesome River Walk.

Seasonal offerings of copious holiday gifts for the home, the body, the spirit, designed by some of the country's most respected artists and craftspersons. Refreshments. Free and open to the public.

On this historic site, a convent was established in 1851, when seven Catholic nuns arrived in San Antonio to start San Antonio's first school for girls. The complex expanded throughout the 1800s under the architectural direction of Francois Giraud.

See you there!

McNay Art Museum Stieren Center

As proud members of the McNay Art Museum down here in beautiful San Antonio, Texas, my wife and I can harldy wait until this Friday night's grand Opening of the new Stieren Center!

With the opening of the Jane and Arthur Stieren Center for Exhibitions, the McNay Art Museum can claim the best of two worlds, retaining the cozy intimacy of founder Marion Koogler McNay's 1920s Spanish Colonial Revival mansion while gaining a sleek new wing specially designed for large-scale modern and contemporary art.

The Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum, pictured above, or simply the McNay as the locals refer to her, is the state's first private art museum, and now can be mentioned in the same breath with the Menil Collection in Houston and the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth.

Designed by French architect Jean-Paul Viguier, the center has about 45,000 square feet of floor space, including the 7,500-square-foot Tobin Exhibition Galleries for large shows. A state-of-the-art lecture hall, high-tech learning centers, a new gift shop, a works-on-paper gallery and an outdoor sculpture garden are the icing on the cake.

The public opening will be preceded by a black-tie gala Thursday night for donors who gave at least $5,000 to the McNay capital campaign, and a private members opening on Friday night.

My Favorite Ringtone

The closest Dirk No-Win-Ski will ever get to touching an NBA Championship ring is if he reads my blog on his iPhone...

Nice Pre-Game 4 Chatter

SA Town: Boring is just another excuse for fans whose teams can't beat our Spurs.

yndo71: You can't spell boring without ring.

HMK: Genius!

San Antonio: I Love It Lame!

This is from David Gianatasio at Adweek:

The city of love is ... surprise! San Antonio, Texas! I always thought it was Paris. And not Paris, Texas, either. Scorpions and ZZ Top (the band in one case, but not the other) spring to mind on those rare occasions when I ponder the Lone Star State.

But a press release from Bromley Associates set me straight. There’s a new campaign about all the things there are to love in San Antonio, but it will remain largely under wraps until Feb. 14. “We’ve already begun running teasers in the media and via direct mail, so it’s the campaign name and logo that are embargoed.” Fair enough. We won’t print the logo or divulge the slogan, though if some clever reader figures it out, well, that’s just the luck of the draw. Think Texas ... love ... Valentine’s Day.

No doubt, there's lots to love down here in my hometown of San Antonio, but as far as slogans go, you simply can't beat 'Keep San Antonio Lame". Or as my buddy Carlos Zapata put it in his letter to the editor of the San Antonio Current:

Let’s face it, San Antonio is a BIG small town. I think John Lisle of 99.5 KISS FM put it best when he described San Antonio as, “the Barney Fife of metropolitan cities - we have a gun, we just don’t have any bullets.” I really do enjoy reading the Current and being in the advertising business; I think that it is a very good source for advertisers. But come on, I think you need to forget where you live. Just embrace San Antonio and its lameness and stop wishing it were something else. If you need cool, head up to Austin. Embrace San Antonio and our choices without judgment. Keep Austin Weird and please KEEP SAN ANTONIO LAME!

Right on Carlos. And while we're at it, why not crank up our jingle, thi perfect S.A. tune from local rockers Speeder, as our anthem in every bar and nightspot in town at the stroke of midnight, every night: Hey San Antonio!

Have a great weekend and Keep San Antonio Lame!
