Witches' Kitchen

While I'm no wizard in the kitchen, I'm really digging Witches' Kitchen, a 15-piece handcrafted kitchenware collection from Studio Tord Boontje.

As part of the Artecnica Design With Conscience project, the collection is a collaborative effort in sustainable design commissioned by Artecnica, designed by Studio Tord Boontje, and made by artisan communities in Brazil, Colombia, and Guatemala.

Very cool stuff.

Acoustic IPhone Speaker

Dig the totally natural alternative to electronically amplified iPhone sound docks.

Using only the iPhone's built in speaker, the Koostik. acoustically amplifies the volume output by 2 to 4 times!

Think of a solid body guitar that's unplugged-you strum the strings and get a little bit of sound. But if those strings are placed over a hollow body guitar and you strum the strings-you suddenly have acoustic music. The same principal is at work with Koostik.. Simply place your iPhone into the center cradle, and immediately you hear your music acoustically amplified, way cool.

The Koostik is designed so it works with all generations of iPhone. All of the external buttons and controls of the phone are easily accessible while the phone is docked in the Koostik.

Very nice.

Recover: Beauty & Protection

Designed to compliment the simplistic style of Apple products and allowing for distinction that matches your own. Recover skins incorporate minimalistic design and limited manipulation merging classic with contemporary to redefine the ordinary.

Recover skins are precision laser-cut from authentic wood veneers. Each unique piece is hand sanded, stained, and lacquered in Recover’s Portland-based woodshop to ensure long lasting beauty and protection. All skins are constructed with professional grade 3M adhesive backing that allows for simple and strong adhesion while still allowing for removal if desired. Each one-of-a-kind piece is designed to fit your devices specific model and size.

Nice! And yes, they also have options for your iPhone and even customization. I'm getting the above Walnut Chocolate for my iPad - the $30 US price is totally fair and right on the money as far as I'm concerned.

Oh, and if you're not too busy, you might want take a little peak at your future. The future of your fabulous lifestyle that is, coutesey of the brilliant folks at FlipBoard. So, what is FlipBoard? Only the future of Social Not-Working as we knew it!

The wicked smart folks at Cool Hunting break it down like this:

The brainchild of former Apple iPhone engineer Evan Doll and entrepreneur Mike McCue, the "personal social magazine" takes normal RSS feeds and configures them as a newspaper layout, showing headlines, runners and ultimately the full story. Additionally, Flipboard displays Tweets about each article and allows you to add your own comment.

Seriously, FlipBoard truly makes facebook look like a freaking puppet show!

You're welcome.

Log Out - Rock On!

Not your typical old school log cabin, this is actually a sweet little recording studio built and designed by Hans Linberg - a wood building facade covering a prefabricated plastic and steel frame. Nice!

Reclaimed Wood In Kitchens

While working on a kitchen renovation Apartment Therapy's Annie Werble uncovered a structural column smack dab in the middle of their design. To incorporate the discovery into the scheme, they set vintage railroad ties on all sides of the concrete structure, and the gorgeous patina of the wood makes the eyesore melt away.

I'm particularly digging the type treatment on those nice big storage drawers.

Check out the rest from those smart and resourceful folks over at: Apartment Therapy.

And if you happen to be looking for reclaimed wood in your area the Building Materials Reuse Association is a great place to start.

Oh, and speaking of disegno astuto e sostenibile, dig this: Controprogetto.

Man, I really want one of these! Check out the latest product from creative collaboration Laikingland, Magnet Mobiles by Ivan Black.

Laikingland, based in both the UK and The Netherlands, design and manufacture beautifully crafted kinetic objects that engage, and evoke a sense of wonder, play and nostalgia.

These awesome magnetic mobiles consist of lightweight rotating forms that spiral around magnet and ball bearing mechanisms. The near frictionless mechanisms allow the Magnet Mobiles to be activated with a simple light blow.

Micro Casa

I'm always interested in experiencing space saving concepts in person and I'd really love to take a tour of this ultra-compact stairwell dwelling completed in France by H2O Architects back in June of 2007.

Originally designed and built for a lucky teenager, the 12 sqm. house comes complete with four split-levels and is truly an exercise in extreme storage solutions.

Genius. More Info and images: H2O Architectes.

The Crescendo C2

The Stilvoll website describes the Crescendo C2 table as enduring, useful and unique.

Judging from both the site and the photos, I'd have to agree. Combining work with desire, the German Crescendo C2 uses the natural aesthetic variety of the wood as a key style characteristic.

Handcrafted from a solid piece of wood, each Crescendo C2 is a modern interpretation of the term “desk.“ Some call it “desk,“ others “a piece of furniture to fall in love with.” We call it Crescendo C2.

Practical use and ergonomic variability are implemented traditionally in an unobstrusive and unique way. An integrated cable duct with shelves, the variable vertical adjustment or the innovative inclination mechanism are organic components of the design and remain invisible.

I want one.

Wood is Big

SharkThang Radio

Good To Know:
According to the good folks over at Wired, always a reliable trendspotting source, wood is a recurring design motif at the 2007 CES, present throughout the showrooms in the details and trim, especially in LCD picture frames by Avion, Philips, Kodak and many smaller vendors.

Each resembles a scale model of the giant wood-paneled screens which we think will become ubiquitous in coming years. They displayed a startling traditionalism in their design, with complex Victorian scrollwork sharing shelf space with rustic southern driftwood and European contemporary design.
