Cymbolism

Color is the ultimate tool a designer has at his or her disposal to communicate feeling and mood. Cymbolism is a new website that attempts to quantify the association between colors and words, making it simple for designers to choose the best colors for the desired emotional effect.

Although they've only got 155 words in the word bank, it's a nice concept that seems to be off to a great start: Cymbolism. Good luck.

Living Color!

"Do you freak out if someone asks you to match print colors to Web colors? Or, maybe you just can’t decide whether the orange would work better with the blue or the green. Either way, many designers may not realize how easy it is to choose a palette for that new Web design. Additionally, many designers might be surprised to learn that they can stay on top of color trends with a few visits to fashion design Web sites.

"All those tips and more are listed below in this list of 101 color resources for Web designers. The categories are listed alphabetically as are all the links contained within each category. Although the sites are numbered, this does not mean that one site is better than others. Visit them all and bookmark the ones that will help you become the most color-savvy Web designer around."

Thanks to the brains, time and generosity of Jimmy Atkinson, we can all engulf and book mark the whole dang thang over at WHDB 101 Color Resources for Web Designers.

Color & Meaning

Q: I'm working on a series of logos and labels for a Japanese micro brewery in Osaka catering to a niche of affluent water-skiing Hawaiian Monks. Are there any colors I should avoid that might have potential inherent negative cultural connotations?

A: That's an excellent question. I suggest you pay a visit to the smart folks over at Sibagraphics.

It's a great start anyway!

Covered in Color

The smart folks over at Color Lovers have a nice section over at their site focusing on the color palettes used on current magazine covers.

These simple visual clues of color make a significant impact on folks browsing the magazine rack, illustrating and accentuating the contents of each issue while providing a nice pulse on what's happening in the ever changing world of color trends.

It's a pretty nice reference tool - check it out: Magazine Cover Colors.

And while we're on the subject of nice time saving color reference tools, I'm digging the Color Pallette Generator, Kuler from Adobe and Color Hunter. Both sites enable you to enter the tag, hex code, or image URL of an image to get a color palette that matches the image.

Nice Color Palette Generator

Wow, get a load of this sweet Color Palette Generator!

Below is the color pallette it derived from the image of a proposed version of the "2008 Let's Go Nice!" travel book I'm working on as seen above.

This awesome little generator let's you enter the URL of an image to get a custom color palette that matches the image.

Just be sure to keep the file size of the image you upload under 150kb and you're good to go!

Whether you're a web designer, painter, an interior person or anyone that simply digs color harmony, I think you'll like this.

In the right hands, this is a super nice, smart and powerful little information tool - so why not use it. Although not totally perfect yet, it's a great start.

If this was mine I'd sell it to flickr - a perfect place for a tool like this to live.
