10 Principles

10 Principles

I love Frank Chimero's intro to his latest Aisle One piece, aptly titled 10 Principles That Might Make Your Work Better or May Make It Worse. (And Frank's illustration and design work rocks as well!)

"I hate the word “tip.” It implies that there’s something that you don’t know. Some secret little gem that, when sprinkled on your work, your creative process, your diet, or your sex life will magically make it all better. They promise to make all of it effervescent, and float above everything, defying gravity above all those poor folks who didn’t happen to stumble upon Dumbo’s magic feather like you did.

Tips are easy. And shallow. Principles, though, now that’s something worth talking about. If tips are puddles, principles can be oceans. They can be deep enough to hold intrepid adventures, yet tame enough to provide a significant bounty to nourish a creative life. They can serve as a north star and a rallying point. More than anything, they can be an inspiration. Sailors will always sing about the sea."

Nice.

My favorites are 9 and 10:

9) There is nothing keeping you from doing the sort of work that you wish.
What do you want? It’s a hard, yet crucial question. We all do creative work to get happy. It’s why we let it beat us up, and it’s why we keep crawling back to it. Figure out precisely what you want, and realize that if no one will pay you to make it, you can still make it for yourself. And you still win, because you’re happy.

10) Execute.
An idea on the page is worth 100x more than an idea in the mind. You can only judge and be judged by work that’s executed. Eventually, we all realize that most of the ideas that look great in our mind look dumb once they’re real. But, at least you now know.

Works for me!

Jolly Old Saint Nicholas

Merry Christmas!

Steven Heller explains how Santa Claus came to be known for his snowy white beard and red suit by looking back at the illustrators who gave life to this now iconic image.

The Santa above is by Raymond Pratt from the 1952 "What's New" by Abbott Laboratories.

Dig Steven Heller's: ’Twas the Icon of Christmas.

Wat?

These are so awesome!

Check out the rest of New Zealand illustrator and designer Toby Morris's daily drawings on his life in Amsterdam. I really dig his man on the street perspective of everyday life in one of the world's most amazing cities.

He does these when he's not designing gig posters, eating cheese and drinking beer in sunny Amsterdam.

Good stuff, rock on Toby and thanks for making me laugh!

Heinz Edelmann

Sad news about Heinz Edelmann, he passed away yesterday, July 21st 2009. Edelmann was 75. The photo above is from 1968.

With Heinz Edelmann, the graphic design community looses one of its most innovative practitioners. During his long and prolific career he has created groundbreaking work in the fields of Animation, Advertising and Publishing.

Among the best known of his creations are the illlustrations he did for twen Magazine and Frankfurter Allgemeine Magazine, his book designs for the publishing house Klett Cotta and his posters for the Westdeutscher Rundfunk (West German Broadcasting).

Then there is of course the one chapter in his oeuvre that has made him known worldwide: his stunningly inventive work on the Beatles movie Yellow Submarine.

Edelmann also designed many book covers, including the first German edition of Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings,' and won a contest to design the mascot of the Expo '92 world fair in Spain.

DraWords!

If you're like me and you're a fan of Gary Larson or the New Yorker Caption Contest you'll really dig Craig Frazier’s ongoing, online DraWords project.

Here's the drill - Craig Frazier, a graphic designer whose work has appeared in Time and the Wall Street Journal posts one cartoon a week. Visitors, that means you, have until 5 p.m. Friday to submit your ideas for the caption. The winners are credited immediately online, and in a year or so, when Frazier has enough material for a book, you just might see yourself in print!

Frazier’s drawings are usually simple, trippy and kinda sorta weird, in a good way and are always screaming for an interesting, equally kinda sorta weird, sardonic caption.

I love the fun process. After you sign in and submit your caption you get a weekly email with the best of the submissions that didn't make the cut along with a link to the winner. (These are fun in the same way that the auditions on the first couple of episodes of American Idol are.)

Well, after a few months of submitting my own captions I'm happy to announce that this morning I got the email of last weeks runner ups and was totally stoked to see that I made the book.

Thanks Craig, best of luck with the book!

Here's my submission:

So what are you waiting for? Check out the rest and submit your own - it's fun!

Vanity Fair Type: 1930 Style

Imaginary Interviews by Miguel Covarrubias, from December 1931 issue.

In 1929, Vanity Fair magazine, the jewel in the crown of CondĂ© Nast’s publishing empire, made typographic history. Influenced by Modern design trends throughout Europe, especially the Bauhaus, art director Dr. Mehemed Fehmy Agha introduced Paul Renner's Futura — and also did away with all capital letters in headlines on columns and feature articles.

The result was at once jarring and elegant — illustrating the capital M of Modernism, through the sole use of lowercase letters. It was also an indication that Frank Crownishield (then editor of Vanity Fair), a highly respected literary figure and social bon vivant, and Mr. Nast, one of the most powerful men in mainstream publishing, trusted their Ukraine-born art director enough to let him challenge convention.

Read the entire Stephen Heller article Vanity Fair Type: 1930 Style and once again, thanks to the wicked smart folks over at Design Observer.

Multitasking +

Neuroscience is confirming what we all suspect: Multitasking is dumbing us down and driving us crazy. Here's one man’s odyssey through the nightmare of infinite connectivity.

Check out this cool article from Walter Kirn over at the The Atlantic on the neuroscience that seems to prove my theory that multitasking actually makes us less, not more effective. I mean come on, we all have the same short day, right? If you're doing 3 things using 100% of your attention span that simply means that each task is only getting about 33 percent of your focus.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure this is a good article - I read it this morning while I was listening to NPR and playing tug-of-war with my dogs Ringo and Dazy...

Jonathan Bean Illustration

I first discovered the work of Jonathan Bean a few years back at The Red Balloon, my favorite childrens bookstore here in San Antonio.

He did the covers for a series of books by Ellen Miles that star a teacher with a talent for telling Taylor-Made Tales. I just totally dig his casual style and especially his minimal color pallet.

Check out more of Jonathan Bean's Illustrations.
