Heinz Edelmann

Sad news about Heinz Edelmann, he passed away yesterday, July 21st 2009. Edelmann was 75. The photo above is from 1968.

With Heinz Edelmann, the graphic design community looses one of its most innovative practitioners. During his long and prolific career he has created groundbreaking work in the fields of Animation, Advertising and Publishing.

Among the best known of his creations are the illlustrations he did for twen Magazine and Frankfurter Allgemeine Magazine, his book designs for the publishing house Klett Cotta and his posters for the Westdeutscher Rundfunk (West German Broadcasting).

Then there is of course the one chapter in his oeuvre that has made him known worldwide: his stunningly inventive work on the Beatles movie Yellow Submarine.

Edelmann also designed many book covers, including the first German edition of Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings,' and won a contest to design the mascot of the Expo '92 world fair in Spain.

Turntable Christmas Rewind!

I've been a little slammed this December with, you know, life, work and the usual, so this is kind of a lazy post - but a not so lazy post if you're new to Necessito La Music!

Back in 2006 through the entire month of December I posted some of my favorite and obscure Christmas gems.

If you missed it, fear not and behold the beauty and power of the blog!

Here's a day by day posting of last December's goodies all on one page - and like most things that proove worth while, you're usually best off starting at the bottom (of the page!)

Enjoy and Happy Chistmas!

Liverpool Letterpool News

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!

Letterpool is a community art project showcasing examples of glorious typography in and around Liverpool from modern day, dating back to the eighteenth century and beyond. We are calling for entries from the people of Liverpool to send in photographs of your favourite examples of type, ranging from funky and artistic to commercial and industrial.

Many of the photos will be shown on the Letterpool web site and 100 of the best will make it into a hardback book to be published at the end of this year.

Dig it: Letterpool.

And speaking of liverpool... For 44 years a canister of film had been stored in a damp garage in South London; unopened, unloved and almost thrown away.
But, finally, somebody took a look inside - and realised they had unearthed a piece of pop history.

This is the story of a lost Beatles interview, produced by Howard Shannon - which is to be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on Tuesday for the first time since it was originally recorded.

The nine-minute interview took place in the studios of Scottish Television on Thursday, 30 April, 1964 and airs at on Tuesday 1 July, and again at on Saturday 5 July, check out BBC for more info.

And who knows, you might just might find it here over at Necessito La Music...

Band Logos That Rock!

The ever witty insaniacs over at Abduzeedo have a come up with a pretty cool Top 25 Best Band Logo list.

Nice job guys, but there are a few blaring omissions like Zeppelin, The New York Dolls and dude, you can't leave out Legs Diamond!

Kiss made it all the way to number 4 and The Beatles clocked in at 17.

I must say though, I totally agree with the top choice. But according to my bud Carlos Zapata, Angel should get the top spot.

What do you think? Check it out: Abduzeedo
