Manual Espresso

Bringing the press back to espresso - check out this environmentally friendly, manually operated Espresso Maker.

Using almost zero electricity and enabling you to make great café-style coffee at home, the only enegry it requires is the amount of energy it takes to boil some water and then a little human-powered force to press down the arms of the machine.

Nice!

The Wandering Mind

Step One
My best ideas seem to surface when I'm working on an illustration, cutting the grass, vacuuming, walking the dogs or playing Snood.

And a couple of rounds of good coffee after a good night's sleep are always a good idea.

By most measures, we spend about a third of our time daydreaming, yet our brain is unusually active during these seemingly idle moments. Left to its own devices, our brain activates several areas associated with complex problem solving, which researchers had previously assumed were dormant during daydreams. Moreover, it appears to be the only time these areas work in unison.

"People assumed that when your mind wandered it was empty," says cognitive neuroscientist Kalina Christoff at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, who reported the findings last month in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. As measured by brain activity, however, "mind wandering is a much more active state than we ever imagined, much more active than during reasoning with a complex problem."

The above is from Robert Lee Hotz latest article: A Wandering Mind Heads Straight Toward Insight in the Science Journal from the Wallstreet Journal. It's a really insightful read that goes great with morning coffee and Cliff Kuang's recent Fasct Company piece:Hard Work's Overrated, Maybe Detrimental.

Coffee Smarts

Talk about perfect timing!

Thanks to the good folks over at Consumer Reports, we can all be frugal without sacrificing taste and save 5.25 per pound on 100% Colombian Coffee!

Consumer Reports coffee experts taste tested 19 ground coffees and deemed the $6.28 per pound Eight O'Clock Coffee 100 Percent Colombian a complex blend of earthy and fruity coffee, with a bright, pleasing sourness.

Compare that to Starbucks Coffee Colombia Medium, $11.53 per pound, which didn't even place among the top regular coffees.

Beyond Starbucks

Good Coffee
Man, I really, really love coffee, really good coffee...

Here's a nice relaxing and insightful read from Ted Botha about one of life's greatest pleasures... Beyond Starbucks.

And what's good java without a chilled-out, mellow background soundtrack to enhance your already fabulous lifestyle? Well, it's still pretty damn good, but I believe the right audio can make it even more of an experience.

So, with that in mind... Tune in, all of the above goes perfect as you listen to me and my buddy Brian Parrish spinning fresh and jazzy art school coffee vibes, every other Saturday morning from 7-9am on KSYM 90.1.

Dig it live or grab the podcast version somewhere over here: Hammond Eggs.

Mmmmm. Coffee...

Backstory Cafe

The lucky folks in Chicago have a brand spankingly fresh community-based initiative in the form of a new cafe within the walls of Experimental Station thanks to spearhead Sara Black of the artist group Material Exchange and others.

Backstory's mission is to be a small coffee/tea house and cafe and neighborhood meeting place, a site for social engagement.

"Backstory is an infoshop and used bookshop (offering titles suggested by local artists, activists, environmentalists, educators and religious leaders) all supported by a small cafe serving in the spirit of slow food in Chicago. We are dedicated to conscientious consumerism, transparency, and ethical alternative business practices. We aim to provide a judgment-free zone that will encourage, produce, and facilitate a thoughtful exchange of ideas, respectful discussion, and productive social activity. We are a community-based initiative that aims to provide a convivial space for meeting and function as a resource center for local non-profit initiatives, and neighborhood-based projects. We facilitate the archiving and presentation of promotional materials that will allow a broader audience to access local, social service, cultural, and educational initiatives thereby promoting more actively involved citizenship. In addition to being your neighborhood cafe, we hope be a source for independent media, live music, literary readings, film screenings, round-table discussions, interviews, self-education initiatives, and more. We believe the act of engagement is an end as well as a means to achieve our purpose of growing a more critical consciousness within our community."

Oh how we need a few of these down here in San Antonio. I'd love to be involved with something as smart and cool as Experimental Station and Backstory Cafe.

Hello Applebucks!

Lots of iPod news today - upgrades and improvements abound!

And I got my wish - an iPhone without the phone! So as of today, I can surf the internet with my iPod!

I'm also digging the fact that the new touch screen wi-fi iPod, dubbed The iPod Touch, enables shopping for songs using Apple's iTunes service wirelessly in Starbucks stores.

And according to the Keynote today, the wi-fi at Starbucks is now free with the iPod Touch and iPhones.

Sweet!

The service starts in New York and Seattle on Oct. 2 (my birthday!), and will be rolled out in other cities later.

Afro Coffee

Ah, nothing better than great coffee and good design...

In the beginning it was an ordinary cafe - for coffee. But the Afro Coffee shop at Church Street in sunny Cape Town, South Africa, took it a step further and started designing a tasteful range of products around the beverage: not only beautifying the packaging design of their coffee brand Afro Coffee, but also designing the whole interior of the cafe and eventually enhancing the assortment with their own special tea brand, and fabrics - and even fashion like super cute bags with an African spirit!

Check out this great PingMag interview with the Afro Coffee member Grant Rushmere about alot more than coffee: PingMag: Afro Coffee

Using Coffee To Trick Your Brain

I usually work on multiple projects at the same time, and whenever a new project comes along, I find sometimes find it really difficult to actually get started. Once I’ve begun making progress, I’m able to move smoothly without any problems.

It’s the getting started that’s really difficult, especially if it’s something I’m not really interested in. At an intellectual level I know I have to get started, but I’m not able to summon up the motivation to begin.

For the last few months, the most reliable technique I’ve found to help me get started is to take the work to a coffee shop and begin while sipping coffee. I’ve found that this allows me to get excited about whatever is in front of me at that time. My brain appears to misattribute the physiological response to coffee as excitement about whatever I’m working on at that time.

Of course, once I’ve started on the project, I get into a state where I’m chugging along well after the coffee has worn off. The interesting thing is that the excitement remains.
