Acoustic IPhone Speaker

Dig the totally natural alternative to electronically amplified iPhone sound docks.

Using only the iPhone's built in speaker, the Koostik. acoustically amplifies the volume output by 2 to 4 times!

Think of a solid body guitar that's unplugged-you strum the strings and get a little bit of sound. But if those strings are placed over a hollow body guitar and you strum the strings-you suddenly have acoustic music. The same principal is at work with Koostik.. Simply place your iPhone into the center cradle, and immediately you hear your music acoustically amplified, way cool.

The Koostik is designed so it works with all generations of iPhone. All of the external buttons and controls of the phone are easily accessible while the phone is docked in the Koostik.

Very nice.

The wicked smart folks at Cool Hunting break it down like this:

The brainchild of former Apple iPhone engineer Evan Doll and entrepreneur Mike McCue, the "personal social magazine" takes normal RSS feeds and configures them as a newspaper layout, showing headlines, runners and ultimately the full story. Additionally, Flipboard displays Tweets about each article and allows you to add your own comment.

Seriously, FlipBoard truly makes facebook look like a freaking puppet show!

Stop Yelling, Say Thank You & Put Down That iPhone

IOU! Let's Shake On It!
I sprained my ankle yesterday while out for a run with my dogs Ringo and Dazy and so I'm spending the day with my foot propped up, catching up on some email, reading and writing a few belated Thank You postcards.

I thought I'd share this insightful, quick read from Peter Madden at Advertising Age: Twenty Things I've Learned After 40 Years Living and 10 Years Running an Agency.

Here's a few that ring true for me:

1. Realize what you're great at and do it all the time. Realize what you suck at and stop doing it completely (and put the right person in place to do it).

5. Trust your instincts. You can interview a prospective employee or client 10 times, they can say and do all the right things, but if your Spidey sense is tingling, something is amiss.

8. Do pro bono work for non-profit organizations that are trying hard to make the world a better place. You'll get more out of it.

14. Did someone working for you just disagree with a decision you want to make? Good. Keep her around as long as possible.

16. Throw parties at your office, no matter how humble or grand the space, for no reason at all. It's all about the people in the room, good music, and not running out of booze or ice.

17. Put your f***ing BlackBerry/iPhone down when you're meeting with me.

And of course -

20. Write personal notes thanking people you meet with and who are in your life. Besides death and taxes, the only other sure thing in life is that no matter who you are, it's exciting to get a handwritten note.

That's right,

Thanks again to Peter Madden at Ad Age.

Your iPhone Will Dig This

Ok, this is what I'm talking about! The genius folks at Zagg have just released the perfect portable USB charger and travel companion, The Zagg Sparq.

Sure, the 2 USB ports are sweet and handy but the real deal sealer is the built-in, 6000 mAh battery enabling you to charge your iPhone up to 4 times without having to plug into the wall! And another more cool thing - the The Zagg Sparq recharges when plugged in, all while charging 2 USB devices.

Pretty dang cool.

Brilliant!

In February 2009, Jim McKelvey wasn’t able to sell a piece of his glass art because he couldn’t accept a credit card as payment. Even though a majority of payments has moved to plastic cards, accepting payments from cards is still difficult, requiring long applications, expensive hardware, and an overly complex experience. Square was born a few days later right next to the old San Francisco US Mint.

Today the Square team is focused on bringing immediacy, transparency, and approachability to the world of payments: an inherently social interaction each of us participates in daily. We’re starting with a limited beta and rolling out to everyone in early 2010.

Square is backed by Khosla Ventures and a team of angels.

Square is going to be HUGE.

Real or Fake: Truth Detective App

Sweet! I'm totally stoked to finally share the first of a handful of Apps I've been working on with my team at CreekFrog that is now officially available at the iTunes Store!

Introducing: Real or Fake? Truth Detective!

Hawaii 5-0 - Genius or Lame? The truth - Genius!

Customize your test and share the truth!

Here's an excerpt from the official press release:

"To create a unique visual experience for “Real or Fake? Truth Detective,” CreekFrog collaborated with artist H. Michael Karshis, whose iconic iPod speaker art has been featured in Leander Kahney's Cult of iPod book."

I designed and created the industrial front-end look and feel along with streamlining the original concept.

Totally customizable, Real or Fake is really a sweet little social/party App that truly gets better the more you play and share. It's the perfect ice breaker!

Optimizing Websites for iPhone

The iPhone browsing experience is quite different than the regular browsing experience. The buttons and hyperlinks have to be bigger because our fingers are not as sharp as the mouse pointer. Optimizing a website for iPhone is not rocket science. It’s the same HTML, CSS and JavaScript that you already know. The only real major difference is the screen size.

Smashing Magazine is featuring a nice showcase of websites specifically optimized for iPhone. You'll also find some useful tools and tips to help you optimize your website for the iPhone.

One of my favorites so far is iPhoney.

iPhoney gives you a pixel-accurate web browsing environment—powered by Safari—that you can use when developing web sites for iPhone. It’s a perfect tool to see how your web creations will look on iPhone.

Good stuff!

I'm Apt!

Finally! Searching through the 50,000 + apps in the iTunes app store is much easier when you’re not using the iTunes app store.

Freshly launched today, uquery.com aims to be what iLounge is to the iPod and serve as the Go-To site when it comes to safely and effectively guiding you through the deep, dense dark jungle of the app discovery process.

The site uses its own system of algorithms called “AppRank” to make it easy and fast to find the right app for certain tasks. Search results appear in a easy to navigate center column along with options to refine your search.

With a couple of apps in development I'm apt to visit uquery.com quite often.

Sound Ideas

Being the audio, radio, speaker freak that I am, you know that I'm totally digging the concept of this prototype speaker shelf.

In the words of the designer: Why the traditional speaker has to be put away in the corner of the room or hidden in the wall? Speaker could be displaied, and the aditional function could be imparted. The object becomes the item of furniture by a simple arrengement of dvd and books. Two suggestion of shape give the possibility to arrange the interior in the modern style and to achieve a good quality of home video amplification.

Could not agree more!

And here's one of my latest - the official HMK iPhone Conference Speaker Box:

iPhone New Yorker Cover Art

Wow! Mr. Jorge Colombo drew the above June 1st cover scene, of a late-night gathering around a 42nd Street hot dog stand, entirely with the iPhone application Brushes. Because of the smears and washes of color required by the inexact medium, it comes off as dreamy, not sharp and technological.

“The best feature of it is that it doesn’t feel like something that was done digitally; quite the opposite,” said Françoise Mouly, the art editor for The New Yorker. “All too often the technology is directed in only one direction, which is to make things more tight, and this, what he did very well, is use this technology for something that is free flowing, and I think that’s what makes it so poetic and magical.”

Read the rest over at the New York Times and make sure to check out more of Jorge Colombo's iSketches as well as iPhone artist Xoan Baltar I found over via flickr, they're really pretty amazing.

The Amazing Ocarina!

Yeah, I know, another iPhone App post - but this one is truly amazing and just in time for sitting around by the campfire.

Ocarina is the first true musical instrument created for the iPhone. Both experts and beginners will be amazed by this innovative player. Ocarina is sensitive to your breath, touch and movements, making it even more versatile than the original. Unlike other musical applications, there are no pre-compiled riffs so musicians will find unlimited opportunities for self-expression.

Check it out: Ocarina!
