Dig the Typo Chair from designer Michael Bom. The abstract typographic Typo Chair is made from recycled billboards of Finnish Birch multiplex. Nice.

Ghost in the Machine

Check out the amazing work of Erika Iris Simmons, an artist specializing in using non traditional media... old books, cassettes, playing cards, magazines, credit cards, etc.

In her latest series, Ghost in the Machine, she brilliantly showcases a number of portraits of musicians made out of recycled cassette tape with original cassette. Also included are portraits made from old film and reels.

Nice stuff: Ghost in the Machine.

Reclaimed Wood In Kitchens

While working on a kitchen renovation Apartment Therapy's Annie Werble uncovered a structural column smack dab in the middle of their design. To incorporate the discovery into the scheme, they set vintage railroad ties on all sides of the concrete structure, and the gorgeous patina of the wood makes the eyesore melt away.

I'm particularly digging the type treatment on those nice big storage drawers.

Check out the rest from those smart and resourceful folks over at: Apartment Therapy.

And if you happen to be looking for reclaimed wood in your area the Building Materials Reuse Association is a great place to start.

Oh, and speaking of disegno astuto e sostenibile, dig this: Controprogetto.

Schell-Wheeler House by Johnston Architects

Wow. Totally digging this awesome, smart home designed by Johnston Architects PLLC and built by Tall Tree Construction.

Blow-down trees from storms provided the logs that were milled into siding, fascias and trim. A ground source heat pump, supplemented by solar water preheating supplies energy to the house.

Wicked Smart Storage

What's not to love about this basic, down and dirty, simple storage solution? Using standard wooden beams detailed with leather and wool, this multifunctional storage system from TAF contains shelves, cupboards, hooks and sound absorbents.

Gabriella Gustafson and Mattias Ståhlbom have run the architecture and design studio TAF in Stockholm, Sweden since 2002. TAF’s aim is to make ordinary life less ordinary through subtle but effective changes in how products and architecture appear and function. A recurrent departure point in TAF projects is that everyday objects by their very commonness can be made uncommon.

More smart design: TAF.

The Story Of Stuff

This is so awesome. Check out Annie Leonard's The Story Of Stuff. The perfect educational springboard for both young and old alike regarding consumerism and its impact on you, me and our one and only planet Earth.

The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world.

It'll teach you something, it'll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever.

If I were president I'd make sure The Story Of Stuff was shown to every student in every school in every country.

But I'm not the president and I'm just as tired as everyone else as far as waiting on the government to Change and fix things so I guess it's up to everyone reading this to share this, plant the seed and start thinking about not only where all this stuff comes from , but where it all goes when we throw it away.

If we really want to Change things, watching and sharing The Story Of Stuff is a step in the right direction.

Ecopod

Dig this cool home recycling center with compaction and collection. Designed by BMW Designworks, the ecopod cleans up the way you recycle with its eco-chic design and functionality.

After dropping an aluminum can or plastic bottle in the top opening, press the ecostep to hear the sweet sound of compaction. As the ecostep releases, the redeemable container automatically falls into the enclosed collection bin. Open the door and remove the bin for collection or redemption. Glass, paper and other recyclable items can be stored in the removeable bins inside the top lid.

Check it out: Ecopod .

Nice.
