The Olmos Pharmacy is Back!

That's Right! And I am wicked happy and lucky to be working with Rod Campbell, Carlos Padilla and Stefan Shambora, some really cool, dedicated folks on the rebirth and rebranding of the classic Olmos Pharmacy Diner and Pub here in San Antonio.

Awesome Angus Beef Bacon Cheeseburger complete with a side salad with bleu cheese and an icey cold pint of Lucky Ol' Sun; a Belgian Strong Pale Ale style beer brewed by San Antonio's own Ranger Creek Brewing.

Classic Shakes & Malts since 1944. Real deal, old school soda fountain drinks and now featuring 10 Rotating Taps of great, locally crafted IPA's, Ales and Cider!

Breakfast served until 3:00 PM!

Sweet Dreams

Working on the branding and identity development of the soon to be open Dog & Bee Pub in Beeville the last few months I've had hexagons and honeycombs invading my dreams and seemingly popping up everywhere I look. These are a few of my favorite examples:

Nectar is a hanging lamp series by Rebecca Asquith made of lightweight felted polyester that resemble the shapes seen in beehives. At night, they show off a warm glow that emphasizes the unique hexagonal construction.

And finally, these very cool honeycomb shelves from the UK's Unto This Last.

Some Sweet Honey Facts:

1. Honey contains vitamins and antioxidants, but is fat free, cholesterol free and sodium free!
2. One antioxidant called “pinocembrin” is only found in honey.
3. Honey is the only food that includes all the substances necessary to sustain life, including water.
4. Honey has the ability to attract and absorb moisture, which makes it remarkably soothing for minor burns and helps to prevent scarring.
5. Honey speeds the healing of open wounds and also combats infection.
6. As recently as the First World War, honey was being mixed with cod liver oil to dress wounds on the battlefield.
7. Modern science now acknowledges honey as an anti-microbial agent, which means it deters the growth of certain types of bacteria, yeast and molds.
8. Honey and beeswax form the basics of many skin creams, lip-balms, and hand lotions.
9. According to Dr. Paul Gold, a Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia, “people remember things much better after they’ve consumed glucose, a form of sugar found in honey.”
10. Honey is nature’s energy booster! It provides a concentrated energy source that helps prevent fatigue and can boost athletic performance.
11. Recent studies have proven that athletes who took some honey before and after competing recovered more quickly than those who did not.
12. Honey supplies 2 stages of energy. The glucose in honey is absorbed by the body quickly and gives an immediate energy boost. The fructose is absorbed more slowly providing sustained energy.

Gracias to Golden Blossom Honey for the honey facts info.

The flip-side of our first batch of Dog & Bee coasters incorporates a series of honeycombs to play BuzzBee©, a simple little parlor game that's currently in development - stay tuned!

Oh, and one last thing, have you heard about the Magic Hexagon? Pretty sweet stuff!

Just In Time For Fiesta!

This is pretty genius. I think every bar should print these on the flip-side of all their napkins.

Think about it.

Get yours here.

Murphy's Graphic Design Laws

Creative inspiration flows in inverse proportion to the distance from the studio.

Ain't that the truth! Just one of Graphic Design Laws from the smart folks over at Murphy's Graphic Design Laws.

Might be a nice campaign for Murphy's...

Enough Already!

"Four-dollar-a-gallon gasoline may be a cause for outrage. But it pales next to the righteous fury provoked by five-dollar-a-pint beer.

Beer prices at bars and restaurants have risen over the past few months, as prices of hops and barley have skyrocketed and retail business has slowed alongside the economy.

Some restaurants have replaced 16-ounce pint glasses with 14 ouncers -- a type of glassware one bartender called a "falsie."

And customers are complaining that bartenders are increasingly putting less than 16 ounces of beer in a pint glass, filling up the extra space with foam."

Outrageous!

Read the rest of Nancy Keates' piece over at The Wall Street Journal.

Color & Meaning

Q: I'm working on a series of logos and labels for a Japanese micro brewery in Osaka catering to a niche of affluent water-skiing Hawaiian Monks. Are there any colors I should avoid that might have potential inherent negative cultural connotations?

A: That's an excellent question. I suggest you pay a visit to the smart folks over at Sibagraphics.

It's a great start anyway!

...for some unknown reason, this kinda crap is way more funny when it's not clogging my email... And I'm thinking the beer might have something to do with it too...

Just thinking...

So, there's this 2006 study that found that the average American walks about 900 miles a year.

Another study found that Americans drink an average of 22 gallons of beer a year.

So, on average, Americans get about 41 miles per gallon.

Not Bad.
