Little Horn Speakers

Wow, these are some stunning looking speakers!

Handcrafted using their unique Patent Pending design, Little Horn speakers are made by audio freaks Specimen of Chicago using high-density fiberglass and the base is made using heavy, void-free Baltic birch plywood. The base houses the driver and acts as a compression chamber for the horn. The horns are fitted to their base like a neck should be fitted to a guitar — with an exacting alignment and flush fitting surface to ensure the best performance and tonal transmission.

A special inverted design enables the low frequencies to emerge at the top of the enclosure. An octagonally fluted horn carries them upward and lets them flourish into the room. The immense structural rigidity of the horns octagonal geometry minimizes resonances yet allows sound waves to expand freely the way nature intended. There is simply something beautiful here, not just bass frequency reproduction, but a spatial imaging that belies the speaker’s size.

And as if the speakers aren't drool-worthy enough, the Little Horns can also be used in conjunction with Specimen's 300-watt Subwoofer and Hi-Fi Tube Amp. Built using the same Baltic Birch, this 14-inch unit can be finished to match your Little Horns.

Dang, I think I might have to start playing the lottery...

Radio Canada

Made from maple and aluminum, the RADIO CANADA concept is a homage to the cultural significance of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. This radio console design was inspired by the dedication of the many CBC listeners who keep their radio dials permanently set to the national broadcaster.

This will work beyond Canada as well - after setting the radio to your favorite frequencies, mine will toggle between NPR and KSYM, you can toggle between the two without hearing the static in between. Genius.

You know you want one: Science & Sons.

Sound Branding

Dr. Suavetone Special Edition PodCast
An effective brand identity is commonly perceived as a good brand name and logo, trendy package design – dimensions which mainly concern visual senses. However, this common perception of branding is incomplete.

Human beings have five senses, so why would brand strategists leave four of them aside? Over the past few years, senses other than sight have been explored by brand experts and marketers. Although the senses of taste and touch are more difficult for brands to reach, some brands like Singapore Airlines and Rolls Royce have already used scent to build brand identity, also known as olfactive branding.

A new area of focus is now sound branding, explored in this article from Brand Infection.

When you really think about it, this idea and focus is actually not all that new - I mean, if you're not familiar with the NBC Chimes, or the audio tag for Intel, you're either deaf of live someplace like Easter Island.

I've always loved audio tags and jingles and believe they can be just as vital to any branding campaign as any logo and/or tag line. If you've ever listened to my HMK Mystery Streams you're probably already familiar with some of my little audio tags: If: Irregular Frequency created in the summer of 2007 and Totally Bitchin', my first attempt from back in 1987 using samples from Frank and Moon Unit Zappa's Valley Girl (1982) and The Surf Punks Teenage Girls (1980).

Sound Ideas

Being the audio, radio, speaker freak that I am, you know that I'm totally digging the concept of this prototype speaker shelf.

In the words of the designer: Why the traditional speaker has to be put away in the corner of the room or hidden in the wall? Speaker could be displaied, and the aditional function could be imparted. The object becomes the item of furniture by a simple arrengement of dvd and books. Two suggestion of shape give the possibility to arrange the interior in the modern style and to achieve a good quality of home video amplification.

Could not agree more!

Waveform Bracelet

Really digging this very cool idea from The Sound Advice Project.

Although the sound waveform bracelet is intended as a way for parents to record an inspirational message, which is then custom-made into a piece of jewellery as a gift to a teenage child, I find that a bit too limited.

I can see these being created as personal gifts being made from someone's name, a tag line or company name, favorite band, place of birth or even simply using favorite single words or a short phrase like: That's Right.

Dig the simple packaging as well!

Magno Wooden Radios

These are currently on backorder and there's a waiting list but man, these are soooo sweet looking!

Singgih Kartono chooses wood for his radios not just based on aesthetics but on his appreciation of wood's simplicity and organic vitality. The Magno radio combines the most current mp3 player compatible electronics with sustainably grown woods.

Much as I dig the visible tuning mechanism, I think I'm gonna go for the small one with all the nice little holes...

See for yourself: Magno Wooden Radios.

Hey Cuban!

A message for Mark Cuban from a 69 year old Super Spurs Fan: Hey Cuban!.

I grabbed this piece of audio off of the TV from yesterday's KSAT coverage of the Spurs celebration.

I'm not sure which makes me laugh harder - the way she calls out and refers to him a just Cuban or maybe it's the Wicked Witch of the West cackle at the end - either way, it's wicked funny!
