Shop HEMA

HEMA is a Dutch department store that opened in Amsterdam back in November of 1926. With over 150 stores all over the Netherlands, HEMA also has stores in Belgium, Luxemburg, and Germany. In June of this year, HEMA was sold to British investmen t company Lion Capital.

Check out this awesome HEMA product page. It's in Dutch and you can't order anything but just wait a couple of seconds as the page loads, it's worth it...

Site Structure: Quiet vs Loud

A quiet zone in the middle of NYC - Strawberry Fields to be exact.

Quiet structure is achieved when you de–emphasize the structural elements; the containing boxes, structural lines, bullets, structural color elements, etc… and bring a rhythmical consistency to the layout.

Andy Rutledge takes a look at both the main page of CNN.com and then at USA Today.com.

Personally, I'm digging CNN's overall clean and clear presentation of information, it's reminds me of a simple, straight forward and easy to read blog layout.

Even though USA Today’s is not a terrible design, by comparison it is far more chaotic in presentation.

But why is this? Read on as Andy compares a few of the individual elements from these two sites in terms of Quiet Structure vs Loud Structure.

The result is that the content becomes more conspicuous and the overall clarity of presentation is greatly enhanced.

Read the whole Quiet vs Loud article.

Are You Experienced?

Experience is everywhere from cave paintings to broadband websites but what exactly is it?

Read psychologist Tom Guarriello’s primer on defining and designing experience. I know it might sound sort of boring and it's a 3 page article but it really gets great by the end of page one.

If you have anything to do with advertising, design or the web, you'll dig it, I swear.

And as Tom Guarriello put it (as a comment to the original article) "I like the way you describe the designer’s challenge: mix, shake, color, pre-vision, re-vision, en-vision, and let it go. The new emerging from the re-conceptualization of the existing."

Go read: Are You Experienced?

Hello Apple Inc!

Ok. the internet is officially in your pocket.

And, as of today, it's no longer Apple Computer - it's officially Apple Inc. (And, thanks to the brand spanking iPhone, my 30GB video iPod suddenly seems sadly archaic!)

Forget buttons, think Google Maps, GPS, Widgets and live video! Apple has done it again proving one thing I've always believed - that there is no such things as a new idea - only improvements to existing ideas.

The iPhone is sooooo much more than a phone - they should call it the iThang...

Blackberry schmacberry - this is truly iT y'all!

Quoting Wayne Gretzky: "I skate to where the puck is going to be not where it has been."

Thanks Steve!
