Aspiral Clocks

Time keeps on slippin', slippin', slippin'...

The Aspiral Clock is pretty simple and totally genius. Instead of a dial, a spiral and instead of hands, a ball.

Designed and produced in London by Will Aspinall and Niel Lambeth, the face of the Aspiral Clock turns slowly over a twelve hour period while a ball rests on the spiral ledge. As the clock reaches the final twelfth hour the ball drops through a hole and the twelve hour process begins again.

Another Day, Another Collection

This is really cool. Since the first week of this new year I've been following San Francisco mixed media artist and illustrator Lisa Congdon's blog A Collection A Day.


The project will span exactly one year, from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2010. If you're like me and you can't get enough type and design inspiration, this is a nice little blog to keep the creative juices flowing.

Nice job Lisa, best of luck with the project and thanks for sharing.

Wow, what's not to like about this! Behold the OfficePOD!

Some of the benefits of working from home are obvious, reducing commute time and saving you money while enabling you to be more productive. The tricky part, at least from my experience, is keeping work, with it's constant interruptions and home life separate in an effort to maintain the balance of everyday life.

I'm lucky enough to have the luxury of my little office, a detatched garage, just a few steps from the main house. But man, I'm really digging the looks and smart use of space of the OfficePOD as an option for a dedicated work space!

RIP Bob Noorda

“Don’t bore the public with mysterious designs,” Mr. Noorda once said, and he put that dictum into practice. He was a master of spare, elegant and logical designs that caught the eye, from minimalist corporate logos for the Italian publishing house Feltrinelli and the ENI Group of Milan to impressionistic posters for Pirelli, the Italian tire maker.

Mr. Noorda’s best-known work in the United States was for the Metropolitan Transit Authority, which in 1966 commissioned his firm, Unimark International, to modernize and unify the look of the subway system’s signs. The firm had been recommended by Mildred Constantine, an influential design curator at the Museum of Modern Art.

Bob Noorda, an internationally known graphic designer who helped introduce a Modernist look to advertising posters, corporate logos and, in the 1960s, the entire New York City subway system, died on Jan. 11 in Milan, his adopted city. He was 82.

The Champ Turns 68!

One of my childhood sports heros, right up there with Gale Sayers, Pele and Joe Namath - Happy Birthday Muhammad Ali!

He was Cassius Clay. He was the Louisville Lip. The Greatest was born 68 years ago today, January 17th, 1942.

The above is from May 25, 1965. Ali upset the heavily favored Sonny Liston in the first minute of the first round of his first title fight. Amazing!

Red Cross Donations Via iTunes

In response to this week’s devastating earthquake in Haiti, Apple has begun accepting monetary donations for the American Red Cross directly through iTunes.

According to the donation page, 100% of the donation will go to the Red Cross to support emergency relief efforts to help those affected by the earthquake. Due to iTunes not sharing user information with the organization, the Red Cross will be unable to further acknowledge any donations made, and an email receipt will serve as the only record of the donation.

Donate buttons are available in denominations of $5, $10, $25, $50, $100, and $200; Apple has also posted a direct link to the iTunes donation page on its company homepage at apple.com.

Please give what you can - even 10 bux goes a long way!

10 Principles

I love Frank Chimero's intro to his latest Aisle One piece, aptly titled 10 Principles That Might Make Your Work Better or May Make It Worse. (And Frank's illustration and design work rocks as well!)

"I hate the word “tip.” It implies that there’s something that you don’t know. Some secret little gem that, when sprinkled on your work, your creative process, your diet, or your sex life will magically make it all better. They promise to make all of it effervescent, and float above everything, defying gravity above all those poor folks who didn’t happen to stumble upon Dumbo’s magic feather like you did.

Tips are easy. And shallow. Principles, though, now that’s something worth talking about. If tips are puddles, principles can be oceans. They can be deep enough to hold intrepid adventures, yet tame enough to provide a significant bounty to nourish a creative life. They can serve as a north star and a rallying point. More than anything, they can be an inspiration. Sailors will always sing about the sea."

Nice.

My favorites are 9 and 10:

9) There is nothing keeping you from doing the sort of work that you wish.
What do you want? It’s a hard, yet crucial question. We all do creative work to get happy. It’s why we let it beat us up, and it’s why we keep crawling back to it. Figure out precisely what you want, and realize that if no one will pay you to make it, you can still make it for yourself. And you still win, because you’re happy.

10) Execute.
An idea on the page is worth 100x more than an idea in the mind. You can only judge and be judged by work that’s executed. Eventually, we all realize that most of the ideas that look great in our mind look dumb once they’re real. But, at least you now know.
